The frame collapses to a 90 mm × 40 mm footprint via a triple-fold hinge system — frame front folds down, temples fold inward, and the entire assembly slides into a dedicated aluminum tube case the size of a pen. Despite its compact dimensions when folded, the FoldMate IX opens into a full-sized 54 mm lens frame with the rigidity and alignment precision of a conventional unfolding frame. The stainless steel triple-hinge mechanism is rated for 50,000 fold cycles — equivalent to seven folds per day for nineteen years of continuous use. The lens options include a photochromic CR-39 variant that adapts between reading clarity and Category 2 sunglass density, allowing use as both everyday readers and casual outdoor sunglasses from a single frame. Micro-adjustable nose pads rotate on a three-axis ball joint to position the lens at exactly the correct eye-to-lens distance regardless of nose bridge anatomy.
